I'm back in Providence and hit the ground running. Over break, I shot 22 rolls of film in Bakersfield, documenting residential/commercial development and the way industry interacts with it. Today I developed 4 rolls and they turned out great! My biggest fear was that I'd develop them and film would be blank or something... I shot digital files as well so that I can share them online! Here are 5 of my favorites.

It's been a while, but I've still been shooting! I'm trying to get everything posted in the next few days so that I'm all up to date with everything that happened during the fall semester. After that, my focus is on THESIS! It should be a great show. On here I'll post digital files of the locations I'm shooting so you can follow my process.

Warning Signs played another solid 2 hour gig in November. I couldn't really find anyone to go with me (which was a shame, because the guys were great), so I just head over by myself. Turns our some friends had the same idea, so I was pleasantly surprised. Unfortunately, the bouncer was convinced my ID was a fake (not that he didn't believe I was from California, but I was NOT 21). I laugh now, but at the time I was pretty irritated. Anyway, I hung out and snapped a few photos. The venue was pretty poorly lit, so to downplay the 'digital noise,' I made them all black and white.

I'm sitting at AS220 right now, outside the darkroom. The area above the performance space is the youth center and is home to the print shop, the darkroom, and other labs (sculpture, creative writing, film, graphic design...). Right as you come up the stairs, on the wall is written:

Lee Friedlander at the Whitney

I have big plans for this Thanksgiving! One of them includes going to the Whitney. First - I've never been to the Whitney, which is reason enough to go. However, I recently discovered the photographer Lee Friedlander. EPIC. His latest project is called 'America by Car'. It's on display at the Whitney until the end of the month and I cannot wait to see it.

Sidenote: I found Friedlander while trying to find 'appropriate fine art photography influences.' I guess the assignment wasn't all bad.

So there's a new band out there - The Warning Signs. It's got members from Temporary Audio (On a Hiatus. I refuse to recognize that Temp has died), Mike and Nate. Singing and song writing, there's Tim and Dave. I used the studio and it turned out alright, I think. I really want to learn more about the studio lights and set up and everything. It's something I should know, but just don't. The band's first gig is on Saturday, so be on the lookout for shots from that :)

Studio Fun - Self Portraits 10.23.10

So, this afternoon I'm shooting promotional shots for a new band - The Warning Signs. I don't know them super well and even if I did, taking posed promo shots would still be intimidating. I decided to utilize the studio for the shoot. Only problem? I've never used the studio. This morning, I started taking some self portraits. I (obviously) used Aperture filters over them, just for kicks to see the effects :) They're pretty rough shots, grainy and whatnot. For the band, I'll shoot them and then edit the photos in photoshop, smoothing out all the imperfections. For now, enjoy these random, fun self portraits.

Struggling (and starving) Artist.

I don't usually vent on this blog. The purpose of this blog is document my journey as a photographer in a public fashion. I feel this is relevant to my development as an artist, which is why it's being posted.

PC has been a great launching point for my lifelong creative endeavor. However, I often feel pushed in directions that are not necessarily 'me'. When I was 14, sure, I took 'artsy' photos of flowers and whatnot. But I've evolved as an artist since then - as a photographer in particular. My style is undoubtedly commercial. I recognize it and embrace it. When asked who my influences were, I responded with commercial photographers, not 'artists' (though, I would absolutely argue they are artists). Look below and tell me Neil Keifer and Walter Iooss aren't artists.

"I don't see you as an artist in this work."

Hearing that is so discouraging! Clearly, I am an artist. I don't appreciate being looked down upon because I want my photos on magazine covers, CD covers, and mainstream advertisements instead of hung on gallery walls. I feel my creativity is being stifled here. School course requirements are interfering with my work. How ironic that what I'm being criticized on is my lack of creativity.

Today, I showed Eric what he deemed my 'best work thus far.' It was a small personal project based on postcard images I created of Bakersfield. I didn't do this for a class, I did it on my own time, just for kicks. It was created outside the classroom, where I don't have to worry about critiques and meeting requirements or deadlines.

I'm just growing tired of the hypocrisy I'm seeing in the department. I'm an art major, I get it. I should be doing 'artistic' projects that are conceptual and deep. Art that is meant for gallery walls. But then you graduate and enter the 'real world'. "Alright students, take those 'artsy' photos and get yourself a job!" Ummm... no. I want experience photographing musicians, athletes, advertisements, events, ect. So that is the type of art I'm going to create.

Are you seriously going to tell me these aren't 'artsy' photos?

With 75orLess Records, I attended a show at The Penalty Box. I shot three bands - The Mood, The New Society, and Six Star General. The Mood is from the Czech Republic and AWESOME. I really enjoyed their set. The venue was pitch black, and I produced photos that were... subpar, for lack of a better word.

Indie Arts Fest 2010

At the end of August, the city of Providence put on a phenomenal arts and music fest. The Indie Arts Fest was where I took the pictures of roller derby and the skater kids (search 'roller derby' and 'skater kids' to see photos). I took pictures of bands at the show as well. There was a sick outdoor stage set up in the middle of the ice rink.

The glass negative show was a complete success :) We had a whole bunch of people filter in and out of Providence City Hall. People were engaging the photos, asking questions and making their own speculations. It was wonderful. We are having another (yes, I said another!) showing of the glass negatives next month in the public library.

Llama headlined this epic little show at the VFW. The crowd was UNREAL, leading to a beyond amazing show. I've seen Llama approximately 203483920 times, so I do not take this statement lightly: This was the best Llama show I've seen by far. Seriously. Plus, the band pretty much stripped. OwOw!

Summer crashes into Fall.

There was no confusion as to when my summer ended. It ended yesterday at 2pm. RA training has begun an my calm summer days have come to a (somewhat overwhelming) end. However, there is no shortage of photography in my life. A shortage of time to edit and post photos? Yes. Recently, my Foo Fest photos were posted on the Providence Phoenix website : http://thephoenix.com/boston/music/106839-photos-foo-fest-2010-at-as220/ Huge success. This is my second story for the Phoenix, so we'll see where it takes me. I also have a ton of photos to go through from the Indie Arts Fest (which was in July...). Last weekend, I shot a show in Connecticut covering two bands - Llama Tsunami and Defenders of Pluto. Both requesting (and paying for) my services :)

However, my most exciting project currently is the Glass Negative project through AS220. The Providence Public Library found hundreds of glass negatives from the 1800s. Why is this so cool? They're of Providence. Shots of fields where buildings stand now, horse and buggy trotting where the bus station is, city hall way back when. It's amazing. The library gave the negatives to the AS220 darkroom, hoping our staff could do something with them. Our director wrote a grant proposal to the RI Counsel and it was granted! We now have thousands of dollars to spend on paper, framing, and publicity for OUR SHOW that will be going up in City Hall in October.

I get to print out 5 images that I will then frame and hang in the show. I've never been a part of something this huge. I'll be going to a gallery opening in City Hall on October 4th for images that I PRINTED. It's mind blowing.

Joining the AS220 darkroom staff this summer was seriously the best thing I did. It's an unbelievable group of artists who teach photo classes, put on shows, and basically do anything photo related in Providence. Also, I should mention the staff is of about 8 people, so it allows me to really have a hands-on role.

I realize that some of you reading this might not know what AS220 even is. It's a non-profit artist community. AS220 owns several buildings in Providence. There's a community darkroom and printshop (screen printing, t-shirt design, graphic design...), probably the only two in the state, and a rarity in New England. ANYONE can pay for blocks of time in the darkroom and come in and use the facilities and chemicals. Amazing. The darkroom staff puts on adult classes in the evenings for a small fee (really small, considering the awesome things you're learning). Hopefully I'll start teaching a "Get to know you DSLR" (a manual digital camera).

I also work in the performance space, which is a more office like setting (if you could say that, office hours are 11am - 7pm - mornings are for sleeping, and most of the staff walks around barefoot while flaunting their tattoos). There is a venue with a bar and a restaurant where bands play almost every night (it's where I spent my 21st!). I help book bands and make posters (and trek all over town putting them up) and make the monthly calendar... nothing too exciting.

Anyway. Lets get to the photos. The Darkroom staff's first big project was taking portraits on a 100 year old camera. Yeah, I got to work a 100 year old camera. We rigged the back so that we could fit Polaroids in it, and take instant shots. It was a huge success.

Then, because we are such artists, we decided to try and take a double exposure - taking two pictures on one Polaroid. It came out pretty cool!

Last, the glass negatives. Here are 7 of the best that I found in my batch. I will be printing 5 to be framed and displayed in the show at City Hall.

Bakersfield Documentary Project

So, last summer, while creating the inventory list for Camp Starlight's digital photography program, I came across 3 boxes of Kodak postcard photo paper (1500 postcards). I thought, 1. These are SO OLD. 2. There's no darkroom here... I'm taking them with me. So all year, these three boxes have hung out in my closet. I neglected the darkroom, focusing all my time in the digital lab making prints via Mac computers and 5 grand printers.

Now that it's summer, and I'm working at AS220, I've rehashed my love of the darkroom. My method for printing was simply, one test, one print. Real fast and real dirty. I now have a small collection of these postcards. I plan on printing more on Sunday in the darkroom. My goal is to have a large quantity of small, rough prints documenting Bakersfield and it's development. Here are some that I've done so far.

Basically, I just had the most epic Saturday in Providence. The Arts and Business Council of Rhode Island put on an all day event called the Indie Arts Festival. There were bands, art vendors, skater kids, and roller derby! Best day ever, if you ask me.

Last One Out goes acoustic! Originally, I attended the show just for kicks. I figured it'd be kind of a mess considering the guys hadn't played an acoustic show before. And the venue... hot topic? Random. As it turns out, I was totally wrong. The show was a huge success! They drew a nice little crowd, gave away quite a few CDs, and sounded great! I'm definitely looking forward to more Last One Out acoustic sets in the future.

Let the summer in Providence commence! Last night I went to my first show of the season at AS220. I went to see the band o.#+ (oh-dot-pound-plus). They simply rocked my world. They were a type of underground, cryptic, dark/moody/spooky jazz band. If a jazz band resided in the crypts of the Phantom, it would be o.#+. Hopefully I will get to see them again soon.

Ok, so it's not quite a published photo but I've been interning at 75orLess Records for a while now (doing mostly busy work) and I finally decided to write a review for them! 75orLess started out as a music review hub, publishing reviews in 75 words or less on their well known music blog. Since starting, they've signed several bands and are now an independent label. Every now and then I attend shows and photograph their bands (this whole 21+ thing is getting REALLY OLD. I could be getting so many more shows...). They've really been encouraging me to write reviews for the site but I was kind of intimidated and wasn't sure I wanted to. Then Last One Out submitted their EP to be reviewed. How can I say no to friends?! So I wrote my first review :)

Here are a few shots that I really liked from Publications this past semester. I've really enjoyed working for Publications. They send me to a whole bunch of cool events (although, yes, I do get sent to a lot of lectures too...) and it's fun to try and learn the element and photograph right on the spot. I'll be continuing my 'student photographer' position next year as well :)

Upon returning to my childhood room in Bakersfield, CA, I discovered some of my very first photos. Four of them were taken during my junior and senior years in high school (2005-2007), and two were taken during my first semester at PC. I really like them, actually. They were taken with my good ol' Kodak point and shoot. I still have that camera... I also found more that are all from 2005-6. Once I scan them, I'll post them up here too.

Llama Tsunami and the Without Helmet @ NFA 4.30.10

Once Llama finished their show at Three Rivers, we listened to a few other bands and then packed it up, heading to NFA for show #2. NFA had a really nice set up. There was a huge raised stage with nice lights and a pretty decent sound system. The crowd was way better than the crowd at Three Rivers. Also, Llama was still warm from their earlier show, so they put on a great performance, allowing me to get some simply stunning pictures.

Llama Tsunami and the Without Helmet @ Three Rivers 4.30.10

Llama Tsunami is a unique band.

1. They're called Llama Tsunami and the Without Helmet.
2. They're a Ska band.
3. They have an EP out that can be bought, along with Llama Tsunami t-shirts and other merch.
4. They have 8 people in their band. Wild.

My first experience with Llama Tsunami was over a year ago when I attended their EP release party. Let me tell you - they've come a long way since then. They've just finished mixing their full LP and are planning a release party for it at the end of June. In July, they plan to tour the North East. They've been giging around on their EP for quite some time now. I was lucky enough to tag along with the ska band on a double-header night. Their first performance was at Three Rivers Community College. Three Rivers was having a - get this - a ska show. All ska, all night.

My two favorite pictures from the night (the last two shown here) are of brothers Nick and Ben and Nate behind the scenes. It's really great to see the brothers interact on stage, so I was happy to catch a good one of the two of them together. I'd also like to take more pictures of what goes on with the musicians during set up / break down / after the show. Nate flashed me this nice little smile as he assembled his kit.

Audio Out @ AS220 4.24.10

It was an EPIC night at AS220, April 24th, 2010. Powerhouse duo Last One Out and Temporary Audio graced the same bill. Shows at AS220 are always great because the bands get to play on really really nice sound systems, making them sound all the greater. Last One Out, as a really up and coming band this academic year, has developed a friendly rivalry with Temporary Audio, the reigning PC 'it' band. AS220 was an exciting night for Last One Out, because for the first time they held their own against Temporary Audio. The two bands equally rocked the stage, with Last One Out giving their best performance so far. Drummers - AS220 was just not your show. Sorry!

Towering Days @ Stuartstock 2010

Remember Jesse Mack? You should -- http://iheartkellyphotography.blogspot.com/2010/03/jesse-mack-as220.html -- Well this is his band (along with his brother), Towering Days. From what I've listened to, PC band wise, they definitely are the most polished. They have a full CD out "Last Light in the House." When I shot Jesse at AS220, he informed me that he was too poor to pay me in cash, but could pay me in free CDs. I was like, eh, what the heck. He gave me a copy of Last Light in the House and I fell in love with it. Tim Costello and Friends @ Stuartstock 2010

Another first time performance was by Tim Costello (on vocals / keyboard) and his little band. I'm always impressed by a musician who plays piano and sings. Coming from pitiful attempts myself, it's quite difficult. It's great when new bands put themselves out there at PC. I haven't checked out Tim's solo stuff, but I'm sure it's worth a listen.

CUB @ Stuartstock 2010

"We throw our hands above our heads, and let our guards down slowly. You'll have to trust me that we'll make it though." I try to keep an objective feel to my posts, but... I absolutely LOVE CUB. Honestly. I am everywhere they are, popping flashes left and right. The little acoustic band is made of Andy (yes, the same Andy from Temporary Audio!), Maribeth, Bobby, and Beth. Beth is currently in South Africa, so this semester the trio has been going out on their own. They have some GREAT original stuff, but also do phenomenal covers of some Fleet Foxes stuff, to give you an idea of what they sound like. If you like music at all, you'll visit their facebook page and listen to Gardens and Droplet.

Derek Knox and Friends @ Stuartstock 2010

A new band, performing for the first time at Stuartstock, is made of Derek on guitar/vocals, Blake on bass, and Matt on drums. They don't have a name yet. When I asked Matt what I should call them, he said, 'Make a name up.' So I guess if anyone has any ideas... Unfortunately, the sound system wasn't properly set and the levels were all off, so it was difficult to hear Derek sing. I look forward to what these guys can come up with in the future. Should be good stuff.

Triple Point @ Stuartstock 2010

Triple Point is another student band that often plays at PC functions and... certain basement social gatherings. They offer something different than most bands on campus by throwing in Zach on trumpet. He can often be heard playing from his dorm room thoughout the day. No one complains because he's pretty sick.

Last One Out @ Stuartstock

All year long, I wait for one day. It's a day of music, sun, and food. I lay out on a blanket, attempting to tan. On my face - huge sunglasses. In my hand - a large iced coffee. Yes, for one day I turn into one of those girls. This day of epic proportions is STUARTSTOCK. This year, IT RAINED. It rained on my parade, my day, it rained on Stuartstock! Therefore, the festivities were moved inside to McPhail's. Hurray. I hope you can feel my excitement. It's not like I ever photograph bands at McPhail's or anything...

However! I was determined to keep my spirits high. I have 7 bands/performers to get through over the next couple of posts, so keep checking back :)

First up is Last One Out. They're the first of the group because if I had to listen to one more of those guys say, "Have you put our pictures up yet?!" I would have to punch them in the face. Just kidding guys, you know I love your shows and I love taking pictures of you guys :) I couldn't ask for a better group rock stars to befriend.

Last One Out @ The Dome 4.10.10

Another weekend, another house party. Last One Out played a show at The Dome, a popular destination on those college weekend nights. I really cannot wait until I don't have to shoot house parties any more. A step up in the photo world would be nice.The environment was great, but the lighting was... non-existent. I did my best to catch what few shots I could. They did just got a new light, which was pretty cool. It flashed various different colors and it was nice to get away from all the red shots from AS220.

Love Art Hate Racism

Today on campus, SOAR (Society Organized Against Racism) did a photo project for their upcoming Love Art Hate Racism expo. They asked me to be one of the photographers for the event, and we had a wonderful turnout! The basis of Love Art Hate Racism is a display of various anti-racism art forms. There will be a display of the photo project, performers reciting monologues, slam poetry, and various other forms of entertainment, all keeping with the theme "Love Art Hate Racism." The photo project in particular consisted of random students holding signs with anti-racism / pro unity statements. These photos will be printed out and displayed during the event and will also be running on a slide show. We got about 60 participants. The pictures are small here, so click on them to better view the posters.

Last One Out @ Relay for Life 3.26.10

Last One Out also played at Relay. As always, they sounded great, playing for a crowd of more than 1000 people. I'll admit, I don't have as many pictures of them this time because I spent most of the set dancing :)

Temporary Audio @ Relay for Life 3.26.10

LOTS went down this weekend. First, I've got some pictures from Temporary Audio at their Relay for Life performance. Providence College raised over $130,000 for Relay, which is simply incredible. Last time I photographed Temporary Audio, they were performing as a "Power Trio". Since then, they have drafted Mike Tate to be their new guitarist. I'd say he's working out quite well :) I talked to him before the show and he said he could really use a new Facebook profile picture, so I focused on him. Andy Shea, always a crowd favorite, had his own personal fan club. Drummers are difficult to capture, because they are often in the back, blocked by other members. When I managed to snag this shot of Nate, I was quite pleased.

Light bulbs and the Future

For my desktop publishing class, I've been working on a CD cover for Last One Out. Since they're catch phrase is "Last one out, shut out the lights," they've been using a light bulb as their icon. I went with that and designed this for their newest EP.

It's pretty simple (the white lines are fold lines). My professor said it's too 'dated'. The plain light bulbs look like something out of the 70s. I need to make it more contemporary. She showed me some images on Google and suggested I use those. Um... no thanks, I'll use my own photography, thank you. So I guess what I'm going to do is wrap the light bulbs in aluminum foil or mesh wiring or something to make it look more 'contemporary'. I have Thad Russell's voice (my Photo I professor) in my head now, "Kelly. Are you a famous photographer? Are you a teacher? No. When you are, you can do whatever you want. Until then, you do what I want." Yeah yeah.

Yesterday I did a shoot for Publications at the career fair. I walked in, doing my usual, picture here picture there. I was then approached by the head of Career Services who was so relieved to have found me. She quickly teamed me up with 3 guys to help me out. Hm. It's not really that complex to photograph a career fair... not sure what I'm going to do with these guys who are awkwardly staring at me. So I thought to my self, act like you know what you're doing, act like you know what you're doing. It worked out, actually. I had one guy show me around to where all the tables with alumni were. Another guy posed in 'candid' pictures if there was no one already interacting with the alumni at the table. The last guy wrote down the names of everyone in each picture. It worked out great!

Jesse Mack @ AS220 3.14.2010

I'm kind of excited to have photographed Jesse. I first heard him at an open mic last year and thought he was simply fantastic. On Friday, I attended an open mic on campus and Jesse was there yet again. I thought, wow, he is just SO good. He announced that he was playing a solo set at AS220 and then it was decided - I must attend. I introduced myself to him after the open mic and informed him I'd be going to his show, camera in hand. At AS220, Jesse did not disappoint. With a smooth, folk-like sound, he did his thing. Check out his music - the kid's going places. At the end of the night, I had some great pictures and two new CDs : )

Last One Out @ 112 Pinehurst 3.13.10

I don't do house parties often, but when I do, I do them right. Last One Out rocked the basement during this blacklight / highlighter party on Saturday night. The Christmas lights made for some interesting lighting, as did the guys' glowing white shirts.

I returned to AS220 to shoot Six Star General last weekend. This was a pretty monumental gig for me. It was the FIRST time a band outside my group of friends asked me to photograph them and it was the FIRST time I was ever PAID for my photos. Amazing.

Friar Basketball

It's true, we could be doing a tad bit (ok, a LOT) better this season, but these pictures make us look pretty good. I photographed PC vs. Marquette for our school newspaper, The Cowl. I take pictures for it every week. PC vs. Syracuse also went in our paper, but the main reason I photographed it was because someone from Syracuse's student paper asked the Cowl's editor in chief to ask me to photograph Syracuse. Pretty sweet deal.

Photographing a play is quite interesting. For one, the actors LOVE the camera. They're also over the top in everything that they do - facial expressions, hand gestures, and just overall presence. The show was absolutely amazing and I felt so special being able to see it before the masses.

The next weekend, I tagged along with Last One Out. They had a rough start. Before they even started playing, some intoxicated young fellow kept trying to hassle the drummer for his sticks. The guy sat down and just started pounding on everything with his hands. The guys of Last One Out were super tense and unsure of how the night would go. BUT! A few songs in (and a few beers in) they loosened up and put on a phenomenal show. Way to keep it together guys :)

Temporary Audio @ AS220 1.30.2010

In January, Temporary Audio booked a show at AS220 in Providence, RI. It was a pretty successful event. The place was packed with friends and we danced the night away. Definitely one of the best live performances I've seen these guys do. Also, the band lost a guitarist (due to college graduation). This was their first show as the "Power Trio". It worked out wonderfully.

Photo III: Mannequins

I'm a photo student at PC, a studio art major with a concentration in photography. Last semester, I took my first color photography class. I decided to focus on some of the mannequin pieces I found in the drawing room. They were thrown in a pile and I thought they were simply wonderful. They served as inspiration for my larger semester long project. I used these pieces to express loneliness. I wanted to photograph the feeling of being an incomplete body in a world of full-bodied people. They are often alone, bullied, and seek one another in solidarity.

Last October I started working for Providence College Publications. Not one of my more glamorous jobs, but it helps me get my name out there. PC runs an online news update every week called PC Now. It basically covers the major stories that are going on at school, mostly things like guest lectures and special events. It's pretty simple - I go to the events and snap a photo or two and then they're published online. Also, PC puts out a semi-annual magazine that goes to all the alumni and parents of current students. This past winter, I was lucky enough to get a few photos in and to be listed in the 'Photographers' box.
